At the end of the forest road of Saint Ruth, at the bottom of this small valley in the shade, it is still quite cool at the end of October for this departure of hiking. But we are thirteen of us from all over the Rhone Alps ready to brave an uncertain weather, ten men and three women. A little flat track to warm up before starting the ascent in the forest and the first undressing. Between physical exertion and a few rays of sunshine, clothes fall one after the other. Until the moment when, at the end of the forest, we reach the alpine pastures above the Servaz chalet. There, at the foot of the slope of Pointe de Velan, the wind blows with vigour and freshness. Part of the band is getting dressed again. The path climbs steeply up this grassy hill. The passage to the cross at the summit, at 1760m, then on the narrow crest is fast. The landscape of the surrounding peaks and Lake Annecy below is somewhat masked by clouds and grey light. Quickly find a place away from the wind to stop snacks. Even so, being immobile, you cool down quickly and tee shirts, fleece, blankets, hats and gloves become the norm. The steep descent to the GR below allows you to warm up and get rid of these layers of superfluous clothing. Ascent to the Pas de l’ Ours to tilt towards the valley which will take us back to the car park. The first part of the trail is steep and sometimes slippery, then the path gently descends into the forest. The group stretches out on this carpet of dead leaves. The very first ones, in front, take advantage of the meeting of flocks of sheep that flee as they approach, climbing straight up the slope by sending them an avalanche of stone. Finally we find the ascent route and the forest track always in the shade. A 7-hour stroll, without the slightest drop of rain despite threatening clouds. A successful autumn hike.
